Moving from the Challenge to the Change
Every child deserves to grow up safe, supported, and surrounded by caring adults.
Each April, National Child Abuse Prevention Month reminds us that preventing child abuse and neglect takes all of us—families, neighbors, schools, service providers, and communities working together to create the support children and caregivers need to thrive. This year’s theme, “Doing Things Differently: Moving from the Challenge to the Change,” is a reminder that meaningful change happens when we move beyond reacting to crisis and instead focus on building strong families and strong communities.
At CASA of McHenry County, we see every day how important connection, advocacy, and support are in the life of a child. CASA serves children who have already experienced abuse or neglect and are involved in the foster care system. Through trained CASA Advocates, children have a consistent adult who shows up, listens, and speaks up for their best interests.
While CASA’s role begins after abuse or neglect has occurred, our work is closely tied to prevention. When children are seen, heard, and connected to the support they need—and when families have access to resources that help them navigate challenges—we create better outcomes for children and stronger paths forward for families.
Prevention starts with community. It starts with making sure families have access to things like safe housing, food, healthcare, mental health support, education, and trusted relationships. It starts with recognizing that children do better when the adults around them are supported, too.
This month, we invite our community to move beyond awareness and into action. Consider the role you can play in strengthening families and supporting children. Reach out to a parent who may need encouragement. Learn more about the challenges facing children in foster care. Support local organizations committed to child well-being. Or consider becoming a CASA Advocate and making a direct difference in the life of a child.
Child Abuse Prevention Month is about more than recognizing a problem. It is about building a future. It is about doing things differently, moving from challenge to change, and creating a community where every child has the chance to feel safe, supported, and seen.
Because every child deserves someone in their corner.
And every child deserves the opportunity to thrive.
