Advocate Fall Conference 2025: A Day of Connection, Compassion, and Community
This past Saturday, CASA of McHenry County hosted our annual Advocate Fall Conference, and what unfolded was nothing short of inspiring.
From the moment the doors opened, the room was alive with the energy of our Advocates reconnecting, sharing stories, and celebrating one another. In fact, they were so engaged with each other that many skipped the “to-dos” on the opening slideshow — a true testament to the strength of our CASA community.
Peer Connections That Matter
One of the standout moments of the day was simply the organic connection between Advocates. Many arrived early, and instead of heading straight to the informational displays or resources, they chose to talk, share, and support each other. These conversations — rich with insight, encouragement, and humor — were a beautiful reminder of why this community matters so deeply.
Powerful Partner Resources
We were proud to feature a range of local organizations offering tools and support for both our Advocates and the children they serve. Thank you to:
- NAMI McHenry County
- Crystal Lake Public Library
- Warp Corp
- Youth Advisory Board
- Options & Advocacy
- YFC McHenry County
- The Break
These agencies brought forward valuable resources, connections, and ideas that our Advocates can begin using immediately in their work.
A Soul-Stirring Keynote
Our keynote presentation, led by Gary Rukin and Melissa Katz, was a heartfelt and thought-provoking experience. Focused on “allowing our humanness,” the session offered tools to recognize, process, and honor our emotions — a much-needed reminder that showing up for others begins with showing up for ourselves.
Program Updates & Engaged Discussions
CASAs engaged in open dialogue around program updates, including:
- Streamlining reporting tools
- Our new texting app for streamlined communication
- The return of our Holiday Wish List program
The conversation was lively and solution-oriented, filled with thoughtful questions and genuine interest in growing our collective impact.
Catherine’s Story: A Heartfelt Highlight
Perhaps the most emotional moment came during the screening of a video featuring Catherine, one of our Board Members, and her foster care experience. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room. It reminded us all why this work matters so deeply — and the life-changing role a single volunteer can play.
Breakout Groups by Case Goals
The afternoon wrapped up with breakout groups organized by case goals — reunification, adoption, or independent living. These focused conversations allowed for tailored peer learning, shared strategies, and mutual encouragement.
Thank You, Advocates
To our 157 CASA volunteers, thank you. Your compassion, resilience, and unwavering commitment to children in foster care is what makes this work possible. Whether you’re newly trained or a seasoned voice in the courtroom, your presence at the conference — and in our community — makes all the difference.
We are so proud to walk this journey with you.
