If we have all learned anything from The Five Love Languages, it is that there are infinite ways to demonstrate that you care about someone. For my husband, I might plan a fun date night. My daughters, I will pick up a cute lip gloss I know they will love. My best friend, I will send ten funny cat memes to brighten their day.
For our youth in care with CASA of McHenry County, the first step is being willing to show up! Showing love through advocacy is all about action. It is an act of service towards our communities. It is a decision to pour into someone’s cup, knowing they may not be able to pour back. Showing love through advocacy means choosing to stand beside a child with consistency, patience and unwavering belief in their potential. It is listening closely, speaking up for what matters and creating space for them to feel seen, heard and valued. It is rooted in the compassionate belief that every child’s story matters.
This might be playing with cars on the floor with a toddler, it might be attending an IEP meeting for a 2nd grader with their parents or caregiver, it might be calling a 16-year-old after hearing they got in a fight at school, just to ask how they are. From these everyday moments it is then making sure any needs that surface are recognized, any gaps that have been overlooked are addressed and that the child’s voice is represented in court.
Advocating for our youth ensures that they have a consistent person on their side throughout their case and is also an investment for their future. Advocacy makes a meaningful difference at every age, helping younger children build confidence and stability early on, while guiding older youth towards a stable path for adulthood.
At the same time, advocacy can often bring us into close contact with trauma and difficult realities. To continue showing up for our youth, it’s just as important to extend that same compassion inward. Practicing self-care, demonstrating healthy boundaries and seeking support when needed. When Advocates care for their own emotional well-being, they protect their capacity to serve with empathy, resilience and hope. Loving others well begins with remembering to love yourself too.
At CASA of McHenry County, we are deeply grateful for the advocacy, love and compassion shown to children in our community. The willingness to stand beside a child and believe in their future makes a lasting difference. If you feel called to make an impact, we invite you to take the next step. Join us at an upcoming Information Session to learn how you can become an Advocate and help support a child’s story.
