250 Years of Community Creates A Future Worth Showing Up For

As our country marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, communities across the nation are reflecting on the people, places, and values that have shaped us.

For CASA of McHenry County, this milestone is an opportunity to reflect on something we see every day: communities are made stronger when people choose to show up for one another.

For children who have experienced abuse or neglect and are navigating the foster care system, that choice can be life changing.  The CASA community provides the resources that support the children and the Advocates consistently showing up for them.

A CASA Advocate is a trained volunteer appointed to get to know a child’s situation, gather information, and share factual observations with the professionals making decisions about that child’s future. Advocates are often one of the few consistent adults in a child’s life during a time filled with uncertainty, transitions, and difficult questions.

But the impact of one caring adult does not stop with one child.

When a child has someone consistently showing up for them, it creates a ripple effect throughout the people and systems surrounding them. It impacts foster families caring for children who may be navigating trauma and transition. It impacts grandparents stepping in unexpectedly. It impacts biological parents working toward reunification. It impacts teachers, counselors, therapists, caseworkers, and other professionals who suddenly have another person at the table focused entirely on that child’s best interests.

One person showing up can create stability, support, and hope for an entire circle of people.

That is the power of community.

For 250 years, America’s story has been shaped by people who stepped forward to serve, support, mentor, encourage, and care for those around them. In McHenry County, CASA Advocates continue that legacy in a deeply personal way: by making sure children in foster care are seen, heard, and not forgotten.

The future is not built only through major moments or grand gestures. It is built in the quiet, consistent ways people choose to care for one another. It is built when an Advocate attends a meeting, checks in with a child, asks an important question, attends a child’s soccer game, follows up on a concern, or simply remains present.

The future is created when donors, community partners, foster families, volunteers, and supporters recognize that children deserve more than a system to move through. They deserve people who believe their future matters.

This July, join us in celebrating the power of community and the future we can help create for local children. In honor of 250 years, consider a meaningful gift of $25, $50, $100, or $250 to support local children and the Advocates who show up, speak up, and stand with them when it matters most.
